EN 10204 and its correspondence with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)

The PED is a reference point for pressure equipment and for all the accessory components

There is a tight correlation between the EN 10204 standard and Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC, which begins from the purely documental section and combines what is indicated in clauses 3 and 4 of the first regulation with addendum 1 section 4.3. The connection lies in the type of documents to be supplied to clients by the suppliers regarding the use to be made of the various products inside a pressure system.
As an example, the main pressurised parts of categories II, III, IV defined by the Pressure Equipment Directive must undergo a specific inspection that leads, according to the standard, to the issue of a control document of the 3.2 or 3.1 type.
There is also an intermediate category defined by EN 10204 that requires a non-specific inspection and which, according to the Pressure Equipment Directive, corresponds to the main pressurised parts of category I and the pressure seal parts not included in the previous categories. In this case a control document of the 2.2 type can be supplied.
The other cases contemplated by the Pressure Equipment Directive only require certification of the 2.1 type.
